James Martin was born in 1699 in either New Kent County or King & Queen County, Virginia. King & Queen County was established from New Kent County in 1691 and St. John’s Parish served New Kent, King & Queen, and King William Counties in 1680. Colonial parish registers did not survive; however, based on circumstantial evidence it is believed James was born in New Kent County, VA.

Elizabeth Crawford was born in October 1699/1700, to David Crawford II and Elizabeth Crawford (neé Smith). Some researchers show her as being born in James City, Jamestown, VA; however, by 1680 the Crawford’s were living in New Kent County, VA and active in St. Peter’s Parish church, recorded in both Parish registry & vestry records. David was still living in New Kent County as late as 1722; therefore, it is most probable that Elizabeth was born in New Kent County, VA, St. Peter’s Parish. This is also most likely where James and Elizabeth were married. Hanover County was not established until 1721 from New Kent County. After 1721, the location of their homes would fall in Hanover County, as recorded in the Hanover County Road Orders.

James and Elizabeth (neé Crawford) were married around 1719/1720, in New Kent County, VA.  They had nine children who were listed in James’ will of 1775. Also listed in the will were the husbands of daughters Elizabeth and Sarah.
