We are the Martin’s

the mighty, mighty Martin’s

everywhere we go

people want to know

who we are

so we tell them

we are the Martin’s

the mighty, mighty Martin’s

I grew up singing that little ditty; my brothers, sisters and I. Six strong. We wore that song like a badge of honor. Always proud to be a Martin.

My name is Deborah Martin and I’m hooked on researching my family lineage. This is my personal research notebook where I journal and record the mountains of data I have uncovered as I research my Martin family. This is an ongoing project as I add and change information as I research.  If you decide to browse, I hope you find it interesting; if you find an error please let me know. I always try stick to facts and use primary documents as my source….. although it can be challenging when little or no primary documents are to be found in certain situations. There should be an international agreement from the beginning of time that no documents shall be destroyed. Wouldn’t that be nice!

I began researching the Martin line with my brother in the mid 1990’s. At that time most of the research was done in the public library. Luckily, our local public library has a huge genealogy section. My brother was fascinated with the civil war era and spent enormous hours tracking the Martin men through battlefields. I on the other hand, was interested in everything BUT the battlefields, I guess we were a good pair.

So, I spent hours and hours in the library looking for clues and searching through primary documents for information on my Martin line and I found quite a bit. My brother also found lots of valuable information which we combined into a book full of Martin facts. But I was not content with just a bunch of names, places and dates. I wanted to know who these people were and why they did what they did. These people are not just names, they lived full and often difficult lives and, although they have been dead for years, this is my way of getting to know them.

In 2004 we put all of our research together and wrote a book which we presented to our father for his 78th birthday.  Fast forward to 2010.  After a few years off  I got the research bug again and decided to pull that old book out and update it. With my father’s 88th birthday (yikes, now 90th!) quickly approaching, my goal is to write version II of The Martin Family History and present it to him next year. In the meantime, this weblog is my space for keeping track of the multitudes of information we have gathered.

I hope you find it interesting and if we have ancestors in common – which I bet we do – I would love to hear from you. If you find a mistake please let me know and if you have more information than I do on a person or topic, please, please pass it on.

Cheers!

Deborah (Martin)…….what else!

  1. I am just starting to try and research my father’s family, Martin. My mother’s family (Grant) has done a lot of research, but, unfortunately, the Martins were never really that into researching too far back. I was excited to see Goochland, Virginia, Caswell County, and North Carolina- because that matches what little I know of many of my ancestors- to include the Martins.

My name is Grant Martin. My father is Michael C. Martin. He was born in Ware Shoals, SC in 1946. His father was George Wilford Martin. He was born in Woodruff, SC. I have more names, but will take me some time to find them. Wondering if you have any connections to Woodruff, SC, Ware Shoals, SC, or the like. Thanks!

  2. Just thought I’d say Hi from one Deborah Martin to another. so excited to have found your blog. I wonder if we are by some million in one chance related? That would be fun!

  3. Hello I believe we may relatives some how lost through days and ages my grandpa was Troy Benjamin Martin my grandmother is Blanch cochran (cowhorn) Martin. Many of the names listed under Obadiah and slathiel Martin are on my geanolgy line who ever thought. My line was so great. Wow.

  4. My great great grandfather was Hudson Martin from Nelson County Virginia. I can trace back to a story a boat named the Brice that was from the area around Bristol. If anyone knows more history feel free to let me know

  5. HELP ! My great great grandfather was Westley Martin, born in Tennessee circa 1823. He came to Australia from San Francisco in 1852 on the ship “Europe”. He told those who knew him that he came from Tennessee and he worked here in Australia as a hairdresser/barber.
We have his Australian history more or less confirmed, but we know nothing about his US history. It’s a reasonable guess that if he was in San Francisco in 1852, he would have been at the Californian gold rushes, and have made enough money to afford a ship’s passage to Australia, and when he got here, on at least one occasion he was staying in a upmarket hotel on his way to the diggings. The Australian gold rushes commenced in 1851. Westley died on 20 November 1865 in Sydney, Australia

Information given at his wedding ceremony in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, indicates that his parents were Samuel Martin and Delia Martin (nee Hudson)

Can anyone direct me to where I might be able to find more information
